History of the Company

It all started with John Sewell’s custom painting of graphics and murals in Tucson, Arizona. The weekends were booked with complete custom paint jobs.

1975

John started 1st business and named it Sewell Custom Paint. His business offered custom graphics & complete refinishing of fine automobiles. He also offered custom painting for new trucks, Corvettes, etc. for Matthews Chevrolet.

1977

After spending a year and a half custom painting for Cal Worthington Dodge, Earnhart Ford and others, John Sewell moved back to Tucson and started Formula 1 Automotive Arts. He knew Tucson was where he wanted to continue his career in the automotive scene.

1979

Formula 1 moved into a brand-new building located at 596 E 23rd St in Tucson. Though still very much in the custom paint world, Formula 1 was making a move into collision repair on mostly exotic vehicles.

1981

It was apparent that Tucson needed a specialized repair shop that focused on the refinishing of fine automobiles. John was very lucky to have 2 boys that grew up around the shop and their interest in the cars they were around most of their lives brought them both into the family business. The youngest is Tyler Sewell, who started in 2002 and is now Vice President & General Manager of Formula 1 Collision Center.

2002

The older of the brothers, Johnny Sewell, is a Partner & General Manager of the Sewells’ sister company, Hi-Speed Rods & Customs. The custom shop was started because of Johnny’s passion for custom painting. It has made John so proud that his boys have carried on the Sewell name as he gets to watch both companies continue to grow and succeed.

2005

Today, Formula 1 Collision Center has a reputation as one of the top collision & paint shops in the Tucson, Arizona area. In addition to working on all makes and models of vehicles, Formula 1 is also a Certified Subaru Collision Center and a Volvo Certified Collision Facility. QUALITY is never sacrificed, COURTESY is afforded to everyone under their care and the CUSTOMER always comes first!
